Rain on the Road

Tonight as I was driving back from Oregon, it was raining hard.  It had been raining the whole trip down, pounding on the roof of the church most of the time as I was working with the worship band.  As night fell and I headed home, it was not only raining hard, but very dark.  I realized after some time that I was really straining to see; I thought I knew the road, but somehow in the fog it looked different, and I was just fighting to see what was directly in front of me.

It made me think of that verse, "Forgetting what lies behind, and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the prize..."  Wow, that one is really true.  Sometimes we are confused, sometimes we're going through a unexpected, murky place, and we don't know what is in the path ahead.  Sometimes the path that we thought we were on turns out differently, or there is a nasty patch or dangerous water on the road.  So we strain to see what lies ahead, but we can only see what is directly in front of us.

God doesn't promise that we'll always be able to see our way clearly.  But He does promise that He will make a way!  Sometimes all we know is the day ahead.  But we press on to reach the prize.  We give Him the wheel and let Him drive.  Maybe that's why we go through those especially tough patches sometimes.  We can't make it on our own strength, and it makes us turn it all over to Him so that He can bring us to the place where He wants us to be.  He wants us to be close to Him; it is those scary times that sure make us depend on His care.  If everything always was easy, would we connect with Him as deeply?

I don't know about you, but those rainy, foggy spots are a lot like my life, and the road I'm on now isn't the one I thought I'd be on for a few more miles!  Life is always changing, isn't it?  But I'm going to keep going, pressing on, and I'm asking Him to take the wheel so that I get to where He wants me to be.  I'm looking forward to where we're going!  There's sunshine ahead!

"I know the plans I have for you...plans to give you a hope and a future."  Let's ask Him to help us see just far enough ahead to keep going, and take us where He can use us to bless others, and be blessed
